SignalGeneriX has manufactured and donated two smart buoys to the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) to be able to display the real image of the Cypriot seas using sensors and therefore act as main research infrastructure.

The buoys are innovative sensor platforms (Smart Floating Sensor Platforms) worth 130 thousand euros measuring 3 metres in diameter and 7 metres in height (4 metres above the water and 3 metres below the water). The buoys will be used for real-time sampling of the Cypriot sea and the collection of vital environmental and quality data for research. The buoys are also fully energy autonomous through a photovoltaic system and smart energy management and can be controlled remotely through SignalGeneriX’s Wisense® IoT systems management platform.

Due to their size, they accommodate multiple sensors that sample sea surface parameters and water parameters. Some of the data that the buoys collect are data on wind, atmospheric pressure, solar radiation, waves and currents in the area, underwater acoustic activity, as well as several water quality data, and will be processed by the CMMI. This data will allow a much faster reaction by state authorities in cases of crisis such as marine pollution or an increased risk of tsunami.

CMMI CEO Zacharias Siokouros expressed his warm thanks to SignalGeneriX for the donation. To which Dr. Tasos Kounoudis, CEO of SignalGeneriX, replied that SignalGeneriX strongly supports CMMI as a founding partner.

The Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, George Papanastasiou, had the opportunity to see the smart buoys up close and learn about their future contribution to research during a recent visit to the port of Limassol.
