Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) Leads the Way in Sustainable Shipping with ZEST Project Kick-off
CMMI, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, hosted the inaugural meeting of the groundbreaking ZEST project, marking a significant stride towards sustainable shipping solutions. SignalGeneriX Ltd, a key player in this venture, proudly announced its pivotal role in developing cutting-edge technologies and electronics for vessel power management. The overarching goal of the ZEST project is to revolutionize the local coastal fleet of Cyprus by constructing a zero-emissions vessel, addressing pressing decarbonization challenges.
The vision for this ambitious project entails the creation of a fully electric vessel optimized for short-sea routes, with batteries charged from renewable energy sources (RES) expertly monitored and controlled by an innovative power and energy management system, complemented by its digital twin. Ultimately, the ZEST project aims to demonstrate that such environmentally conscious design and construction activities are not only possible but also achievable in Cyprus, leveraging the nation’s collective expertise from industrial and research organizations. CMMI, in its role as the host organization, will oversee the coordination of the project, ensuring its successful development, demonstration, dissemination, and commercialization. Additionally, CMMI will play a critical role in conducting technoeconomic assessments of retrofits and developing a software platform for environmental footprint monitoring based on life-cycle analysis, further solidifying Cyprus’ commitment to sustainable shipping practices.
